Round Table: The Impact of Kazakhstan's Accession to WTO: A Quantitative Assessment

On December 15, 2006 the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Kazakhstan together with the World Bank held a Round Table “The Impact of Kazakhstan’s Accession to the World Trade Organization: A Quantitative Assessment” in Almaty.

During the Round Table Mr. Jesper Jensen, J-Consulting, Copenhagen, and Mr. David Tarr, World Bank, presented and discussed the results of their study with the participants. The event was attended by government officials, academia, foreign experts and domestic businesses.

This study identifies key sources of gains (particularly, improved market access, tariff reduction, liberalization of barriers to foreign direct investments in service sectors). It also identifies key sectors that will gain such as electrical equipment and chemicals, and key sectors that will lose such as wood products, medical equipment, non-metallic products and equipment, vehicles and trailers.

The study also estimated the areas where potential reforms can have larger favourable impact on increased competitiveness of Kazakhstan’s economy as well as the sectors which can be expected to expand or to contract.
