Kazakhstan Irrigation and Drainage Improvement Project

LOAN AMOUNT: IBRD—$80 million

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project will rehabilitate key irrigation and drainage infrastructure, assist the Ministry of Agriculture in planning and implementing irrigation investments in cooperation with various stakeholders, and improve the government’s environmental and monitoring capacity. The first component funds comprehensive reconstruction of 30,000 hectares of on- and inter-farm irrigation and drainage systems. The second component funds a pilot project which will test mechanisms for improving the delivery of basic information, training, and research services to privatized farms. The third component will fund project implementation and support institution building through technical training and assistance for the Ministries of Agriculture, and Ecology and Biological Resources.
