Astana, December 7, 2004¾ The World Bank Country Office in Kazakhstan is pleased to announce launch of the 2005 Small Grants Program for total amount of USD34,000 for Kazakhstan organizations.

The Small Grants Program (SmGP) was created in 1983 to provide a way for the World Bank to promote dialogue and dissemination of information about development in forums outside its own operations. Grants are provided to civil society organizations through participating World Bank Country Offices.  Kazakhstan Country Office has been administering the Small Grants Program for five consecutive years. During the previous five cycles of the Program 47 projects were supported for the total amount of USD 195,000.

Any institution involved in development broadly defined may apply for a grant. However, the SmGP prefers to support nonprofit, nongovernmental, nonacademic organizations. Individual grant cannot exceed USD5,000. Applications are accepted in Astana Country Office and Regional Office in Almaty, application deadline is February 11, 2005.

Activities supported by the SmGP are intended to promote dialogue and dissemination of information, and enhance partnerships with key players in support of the development process. In 2005 the SmGP will support projects focusing on engagement of marginalized and vulnerable groups of population in civic activities solving social problems and addressing environmental issues. As in previous year cycle, priority will be given to activities aimed at raising public awareness of the rural population. Civic engagement is the process through which civil society organizations actively engage in relationships and actions with the state and other development actors to address issues of public concern. World Bank believes that socially active and empowered citizens lead to a significant reduction in poverty.

Additional information on the Small Grants Program and the application form can be found at http://www.worldbank.org.kz/ or obtained in the World Bank Country Office in Astana and Regional Office in Almaty.
